Director, Center for Healthcare Policy & Research

The University of California, Davis, Office of Research, invites applications for the position of Director, Center for Healthcare Policy and Research. This is a full-time, state-supported, tenured appointment, open to members of the Academic Senate on the UC Davis campus and to qualified candidates nationwide eligible for appointment to the UC Davis Academic Senate. An M.D. and/or Ph.D. is required. Experience with health services research and/or policy experience is necessary. This position shares administrative responsibility with an Associate Director. The individual selected will be expected to dedicate 50% of his/her time to Center-related activities, with the remaining time spent in the academic home academic department.

The mission of the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research is to facilitate research, promote education and inform policy about health and healthcare. The goals of this Center are to improve the health of the public by contributing new knowledge about access, delivery, cost and outcomes. Current emphases include disparities, clinician-patient interaction, utilization, cost effectiveness and quality. The Center is an interdisciplinary, collaborative research unit that performs the following functions:

  • Develop and support interdisciplinary collaboration on research projects related to the Center’s mission.
  • Educate and develop careers of scholars with interests in health services and health policy research.
  • Synthesize, interpret and disseminate research findings that assist healthcare policy formation and improve health services delivery.

Among other responsibilities, the Center Director will:

Provide intellectual and administrative leadership and promote the efforts and capabilities of CHPR research to the UC Davis community at large and to current and potential collaborating institutions; facilitate interdisciplinary research and outreach programs; maintain a leadership role in identifying extramural funding sources and fostering the creation of appropriate investigator teams to follow through with preparation and submission of grant/contract proposals; represent the needs of Organized Research Unit* (ORU)-affiliated faculty and students, by representing their activities to involved colleges/units, the Office of Research, and the campus at large; take a leading role in outreach efforts, including interaction with an external ORU Board of Advisors, distinguished lecture series, and the organization of workshops and symposia; maintain proper adherence to all Office of Research and campus administrative, financial and human resource policies and procedures; work with and oversee an Associate Director, CHPR core faculty, principal investigators, and administrative support staff; collaborate with other campus research units such as the Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) and Center for Reducing Health Disparities (CRHD).

The successful candidate should have a proven track record in funded health services research and/or policy for appointment at the associate or full professor level. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated administrative experience.

*An Organized Research Unit (ORU) is an entity unique to the University of California (UC). They are long standing university-based units requiring UC Regents approval for establishment. ORUs report to the campus Vice Chancellor for Research and receive central support.
