Call for Abstracts

2008 AcademyHealth Health Economics Interest Group Meeting
June 7, 2008 * Washington, D.C.

The Health Economics Interest Group (IG) Meeting will be held on June 7, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the day prior to the 2008 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting (ARM) on June 8–10 in Washington, D.C. The program for the IG meeting is developed by volunteer members of the IG advisory committee who are conducting this call for papers.

The meeting will be structured as a workshop, during which presenters will provide a detailed discussion of their motivation, methods, and results, and discussants will have the opportunity to comment on and critique papers. Audience participation also will be encouraged by giving attendees access to the manuscripts prior to the meeting. The goal is to offer researchers the opportunity to present their research in-depth in a setting that promotes a higher level of exchange. Presenters will be required to submit completed papers one month prior to the meeting in order to provide discussants and participants time to read the research and prepare thoughtful commentary during the meeting.

The Health Economics IG Meeting Call for Papers offers researchers the opportunity to disseminate research on topics that may not be featured during the ARM. Specifically, the papers presented during this meeting will emphasize the application of rigorous economic methods to health policy issues.

Call for Papers

Submitted abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by a committee of volunteer reviewers. Authors of selected abstracts will be required to provide a full manuscript on or before May 7, 2008.

Criteria for Evaluating Submissions

Submissions will undergo blind peer review and be evaluated using the following criteria: (1) methodological rigor in economic theory or econometrics; (2) quality and originality; (3) potential significance to economic theory, policy, or practice; (4) clarity of writing and presentation; and (5) presence of preliminary findings and the likelihood of having a completed paper by the deadline. Priority will be given to new or previously unpublished research.

Instructions

Abstracts will be accepted beginning October 15, 2007. Submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on November 26, 2007, to be considered. Only abstracts submitted online will be considered. We encourage you to submit early to ensure prompt confirmation and processing. Results of the review will be sent by December 21, 2007.

To submit:

  • Complete the online submission form. Abstracts submitted without complete information or as an e-mail attachment will not be considered for review.
  • Do not use tables, graphs, special formatting (e.g., bold and underline), or scientific symbols. Abstracts with these features will not be considered.
  • Limit each abstract to 500 words. The abstract should contain sufficient information for the review committee to judge the theoretical motivation, the econometric methods employed, the uniqueness of the approach, the significance of the results and their impact on health care policy, delivery, or practice, and the importance of policy question addressed. In addition, the abstract should convey some sense of the stage of the research.

More Information

The programs of past Health Economics IG meetings are available at academyhealth.org/interestgroups/economics. Additional information about the ARM, which begins the day following the Health Economics IG meeting, is available at academyhealth.org/conferences/arm.htm. Abstracts on 22 themes are requested for the ARM and separate submission is required. Abstract submissions to the ARM Call for Papers, Call for Panels, and Call for Posters are due January 15, 2007, and notifications will be sent in March.

Please note that if you wish to submit abstracts to the Health Economics IG Meeting and the ARM, you must submit separately to each. Submission to one meeting does not imply review by the other.
