The February 2012 issue of Health Services Research (HSR) features the first installment of a new series on research methods. The “Methods Corner” is intended to describe established methods or applications where actual research practice is often deficient, perhaps because the source articles are  unknown or are difficult to access. In this first article of the series, authors Pinar Karaca-Mandic, Edward C. Norton, and AcademyHealth Methods Council Chair Bryan Dowd, explain the use of interaction terms in nonlinear models. The “Methods Corner” series is occasional, and HSR encourages readers to suggest methods and applications that might be appropriate. The journal is also providing free access to a special collection of manuscripts from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars that examine and inform the health reform process as it unfolds. The special issue aims to address the recurring question of how to inform health policy through research. The articles cover a variety of issues in reform, including expanding the safety net of specialty care, a cross-country comparison of pharmaceutical price controls and regulation, as well as articles on physician readiness for medical home reform and a comparison of physician social networks and variation in treatment.
