Meeting Summary: Imagining a World Without Low-Value Care: What Will It Take?

This report summarizes discussions from an October 2019 summit that explored opportunities for reducing the provision of low-value care services.

Convened by AcademyHealth, the ABIM Foundation, and the Donaghue Foundation, in collaboration with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health and the Veterans Administration, stakeholders gathered for a day-long Summit in Washington, D.C. in October 2019.

Participants discussed tools that could enable a reduction in low-value care, through such means as measurement and data as well as effective interventions. They also explored how health systems, physicians, and other stakeholders might decide to adopt interventions through culture change and alignment of incentives.

Summit goals included:

  • Highlight the state of the field of low-value care research and showcase recent progress
  • Defining an agenda for the next five years
  • Support increased stakeholder collaboration and community-building
