This seminar provides an in-depth discussion of observational study designs and their strengths and limitation for effectiveness, and comparative effectiveness research.  The focus of this seminar is to: 1) describe the differences between trials and observational studies; 2) understand how observational studies of comparative effectiveness are used; 3) provide examples of how these observational studies are shaping health policy; and 4) describe the GRACE Principles and other recent efforts to improve the quality of observational studies of comparative effectiveness.

Faculty Bio: Dr. Nancy Dreyer is Chief of Scientific Affairs for Outcome.  Dr. Dreyer has more than 20 years of experiencei n the design, conduct and interpretation of pharmacoepidemiologic research.  At Outcome, she leads a team of epidemiologists, biostatisticians and clinical program designers who work together on observational research and quality improvement programs.  She is the Project Director for Outcome's DEcIDE Center for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).  Dr. Dreyer has held numerous leadership positions, including founding and publishing the peer-reviewed journal, Epidemiology.  In 2007 Dreyer was recognized by the trade journal Pharmavoice as oneo f the 100 most inspiring people in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry.  Recently, Dr. Dreyer served as senior editor and author of the AHRQ handbook, "Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes: A User's Guide," a references for the creation, execution and evaluation of registries.  She also leads development of the Good Research Practices for Observational Studies of Comparative Effectiveness, or the GRACE Principles.  Dr. Dreyer received her PhD in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
