The session provides an overview of statistical concepts for equivalency testing and examples of how to interpret these tests, including examples from mental health and substance abuse research. The discussion focuses on key analytic concepts related to trying to ascertain whether two populations are equivalent, rather than trying to show that they are different, as is frequently done in HSR by conducting tests for equality. Equivalency testing is relatively new to HSR but is emerging as a potentially useful method for testing practice and policy relevant differences between groups or comparators. These methods are of particular significance given the surge in interest and new funding for comparative effectiveness research.
