Overview

This webinar featured presentations and a discussion among the members of the research team coordinated by AcademyHealth that supported the 2021 report Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The webinar was moderated by Susan Hassmiller, R.N., Ph.D., FAAN, the Senior Adviser for Nursing at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which requested and sponsored the report. It featured presentations by Drs. Kent Key, M.P.H., Ph.D., Michigan State University, Karen Johnson, R.N., FSAHM, FAAN, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, Patricia Pittman, Ph.D., George Washington University, and Joanne Spetz, M.A., Ph.D., University of California San Francisco.

The NASEM report lays out a 10-year path forward and provides a framework for policymakers, educators, healthcare system leaders, and payers to strengthen the capacity of the nursing profession and help prepare the next generation of nurses to advance health equity for all. The key areas addressed in the framework include nursing workforce, leadership, nursing education, nurse well-being, payment, and emergency preparedness and response.

This webinar focused on the challenges of building and strengthening the evidence base to address the vital areas of health equity and social determinants of health; community and public health nursing; and nurses’ health and well-being. Presenters identified and discussed the key data gaps and need for a coordinated multi-sector research agenda linking nursing to equity.

Objectives

  1. Increase awareness of the NASEM report’s key recommendations for strengthening nursing capacity and expertise to address health equity;
  2. Help identify gaps in the evidence base for health equity as it applies to nurses;
  3. Describe the implications of the report’s recommendations for nursing research, education, policy, and practice.
