Black mothers and families in Tulsa co-led a study with Oklahoma State University-Tulsa researchers to document the reproductive health inequities Black women face.

Using an arts-based storytelling approach, families were able to describe a health system where providers don’t always listen to them, postpartum mental health screenings lack follow-up, and limited cultural competence creates additional barriers. The findings revealed four areas that require action: 1) access to information, 2) insurance, 3) postpartum care, and 4) cultural competence.

In response, the team co-created sustainable solutions and is convening six-month, co-led working groups with hospital systems, maternal and child health organizations, city representatives, and community leaders to implement achievable changes.
