The Strengthening Colors of Pride (SCoP) coalition sought to document the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people across the San Antonio Metro Area. Specifically, the coalition captured the community’s experiences with physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health, substance use, caregiving, and barriers to affirming care.

The findings revealed pronounced inequities, including homelessness, limited access to appropriate care, inability to afford essential treatments, and struggles with substance use, and showed that health disparities in San Antonio outpace national LGBTQ+ averages.

This work led to the creation of a low-barrier, no-cost, culturally affirming mental health program at Pride Center San Antonio. In addition, the data have informed clinician training programs, strengthened local partners’ grant applications, and elevated LGBTQ+ health needs before the City Council and the Mayor’s Office.
