Compensation is an important part of the career decision-making process, yet it’s often cloaked in mystery. To bring greater transparency to pay in the field of health services and policy research (HSR), AcademyHealth conducted the 2023 Salary and Compensation Survey to examine how compensation varies across geographic regions, career levels, gender, and more.

In response to growing concern about burnout—highlighted in recent member needs assessments—the survey also gathered data on additional components of compensation, workplace culture, and overall job satisfaction in the field.

Findings from the survey informed the development of the Salary and Compensation Report, a detailed analysis created in collaboration with the Department of Health Services Policy and Management at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health.

Available exclusively to members, the report presents data on how salaries vary based on:

  • Workplace Setting
  • Career Level
  • Gender Identity
  • Racial Identity
  • Ethnic Identity
  • Geographic Location
  • And more

Recognizing that negotiating a higher salary is critical for career advancement, AcademyHealth offers this report as a benefit for its membership community. The data is based on responses to the 2023 Salary and Compensation Survey, in which 7,115 researchers were invited to participate and 564 responded—yielding a response rate of 7.9 percent.
