Overview
Thriving in School: A CYSHCN-Driven Roadmap for High Impact School-Based Mental Health Comparative Effectiveness Research was an AcademyHealth project funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), in partnership with Econometrica and Family Voices. This project convened leading voices to generate a national research agenda to build the evidence needed to optimize school-based mental health services for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), specifically with emotional and behavioral needs. The work included a range of interest holders, uniting lived and learned expertise to identify and prioritize pressing evidence gaps to address the needs of this population.
This marketing toolkit provides sample language to use when sharing the project and its outputs such as an environmental scan, a research agenda, briefs, and a webinar recording with your networks who are interested in this work. Learn more about the project here.

Subject: Introducing a New Research Agenda for School-Based Mental Health Services
Dear [insert name],
School-based mental health services can act as a lifeline for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), but coverage for these services varies widely among states. AcademyHealth led a project in collaboration with Econometrica and Family Voices to galvanize the field to identify critical gaps in understanding the evidence gaps in services for CYSHCN with emotional and behavioral needs.
Thriving in School: A CYSHCN-Driven Roadmap for High Impact School-Based Mental Health Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) promoted high-impact research through the:
- Development of a national, coordinated research agenda designed to address identified patient-centered CER gaps in school-based mental health services for CYSHCN; and
- Engagement of the full range of interest holders, inclusive of CYSHCN families, school-based practitioners, state-based policymakers, and researchers, in the process of co-developing the CER agenda.
Download the research agenda here. You can learn more about the project and access resources such as an environmental scan, an informational webinar recording, and more on the project website. Please share this work with your networks broadly and assist in disseminating the research agenda so that we can keep evidence-based interventions for this population of children and youth at the forefront.
