Research Impact Story: Language Access Matters
This downloadable PDF was designed to share the impact and results of Refugee Community Partnership’s community-led research project.
Refugee Community Partnership (RCP), an immigrant and refugee-led mutual aid network in North Carolina, sought to understand how patients with limited English proficiency navigate health care systems.
Their findings revealed critical gaps in language access, including the lack of interpretation during medical appointments, untranslated patient communications, and limited interpretation in dental services, thus leading to misunderstood diagnoses, medication errors, and eroded trust in health care.
As a result of this study, RCP is now partnering with local health systems to provide language justice training, improve interpretation services, and ensure community voices shape health care delivery.
