Dr. Angelica Scanzera is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and a clinician-scientist committed to advancing health equity in eye care. She holds a Doctor of Optometry, an MPH in Epidemiology, and a certificate in Implementation Science. Her research addresses structural barriers to eye care access, using implementation science and human-centered design to co-develop equitable interventions. She is an NIH K23 awardee leading a study to adapt a transportation intervention for patients with diabetic retinopathy. At UIC, she directs the Tele-Ophthalmology Service and the Advanced Medically Necessary Contact Lens Fellowship and chairs the Health Equity Committee at UI Health. Nationally, she co-founded the Community Health Center Special Interest Group within the American Academy of Optometry and serves on multiple DEI and health equity committees. Dr. Scanzera brings a systems-level perspective that bridges clinical care, research, and policy to drive sustainable, equity-centered transformation.
