Genevieve Melton-Meaux is a Professor of Surgery and Health Informatics, Senior Associate Dean of Health Informatics and Data Science, Director for the Center for Learning Health System Sciences, and Associate Director of the Clinical NLP Program at the University of Minnesota. She is also on the Executive Leadership Team of the University of Minnesota-wide Data Science Initiative.
Melton-Meaux is a practicing colorectal surgeon and serves as the Chief Health Informatics and AI Officer for Fairview Health Services, an integrated healthcare delivery system based in the Twin Cities where she leads the health informatics function to leverage EHR/HIT and data-driven decision-making, and Fairviews evidence-based care program. In leading the system AI program, she advances and enables AI/ML capabilities and solutions to provide new opportunities, value and care transformation in a safe and compliant manner.
Her research portfolio includes over 300 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and editorials and extramural funding through NIH, AHRQ, PCORI and FDA. Her interests include surgical informatics, improving note usage in EHRs, evaluating technology solutions in practice, advancing learning health system capabilities and the generation of real-world evidence, and clinical natural language processing (NLP). She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, fellow of the American Surgical Association and American College of Medical Informatics, Immediate Past-President of the American College of Medical Informatics and President/Chair of the Board for the American Medical Informatics Association.
