Margo Brooks Carthon, Ph.D., APRN, FAAN, is an Associate Professor of Nursing and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her background includes receiving a BSN from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, MSN in Adult Health & Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh, and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. A vision of equitable health care guides Dr. Brooks Carthon’s program of research, which focuses on identifying ways that health care delivery and nursing care can be tailored to improve health outcomes for historically marginalized individuals. Her research has received generous support from federal and private funders, including: the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, National Institutes of Health (NINR, NIMHD), the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Results of Dr. Brooks Carthon’s work have been widely cited in high-impact, Interdisciplinary, journals including, BMJ Quality and Safety, Medical Care and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Dr. Brooks Carthon’s clinical experiences as a nurse and background in the humanities and health services research have culminated in efforts to transform health care delivery for individuals who are traditionally underserved (racial and ethnic minorities, economically disadvantaged individuals). She serves as the Co-founder and Executive Director of THRIVE – a systems-based clinical pathway that provides clinical and social support for low-income individuals within the Penn Health System that are transitioning from hospital to home. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurses, Senior Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, an Advisory Board Member of Trinity Mercy Life of West Philadelphia, Co-Associate Director of the Center for Health Outcome & Policy Research and Mentor for the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues’ Emerging Diversity Leadership program.
