Dr. Monica M. Matthieu is a Research Social Work Program Manager at the Central Arkansas Veterans Affairs Health Care System. She is also a Professor at Saint Louis University’s School of Social Work in St. Louis, Missouri.

Most recently, she was named the founding director of the Office of Suicide Prevention’s Center for Advancing Community-engaged Research and Evaluation in Suicide Prevention (ACRE-SP). Dr. Matthieu currently serves as the inaugural lead for the Rapid Response Team, a group dedicated to completing short-term high priority operations projects for the Behavioral Health QUERI and the Learning Core lead for EPIC QUERI, a field-based resource center conducting state-of-the-art implementation science training. She has led multi-year Congressionally mandated implementation, evaluation, and reporting projects, completing reports on Public Law (P.L.) 115-182 § 506; P.L. 114-2 §5; P.L. 116-171 § 201; P.L. 117-37 § 2. Given her expertise in legislation and evidence-based policy, Dr. Matthieu and her team provide ongoing consultation and analytic expertise for our operations partners in the Offices of Mental Health Legislation, Partnership and Policy Team and Readjustment Counseling Service.

She has served as the Co-Implementation Research Coordinator for the Mental Health Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) for the PTSD and Suicide Prevention, Director of the VA’s Patient Safety Center of Inquiry on Suicide Prevention, and PI of the QUERI funded Partnered Evaluation of the National Implementation of the VA Diffusion of Excellence Initiative on Advance Care Planning via Group Visits.

She completed her postdoctoral training at the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide at the University of Rochester Medical Center (2004-2007), her Ph.D. in Social Work at Columbia University (2000-2004), a MSW degree from Tulane University of New Orleans (1994), and Bachelors in Social Work from Northwestern State University (1989-1993).

Her expertise is in the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practices, programs, and policies for Veteran suicide prevention and trauma treatment.
