Shontaya Carrico is a second-year Ph.D. student at the University of California, Davis, specializing in Nursing Science and Healthcare Leadership with an emphasis in African American Studies. Her research addresses diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and antiracism within healthcare. Specifically, she aims to confront systemic and institutional racism within nursing academia and the workforce.
She holds a Master of Science in Nursing specializing in Nursing Education/Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan. With twenty years of nursing experience, half of which she has spent as an advanced practice nurse, Shontaya has devoted herself to improving healthcare quality and patient safety.
Outside of her academic pursuits, Shontaya actively engages with various professional organizations dedicated to advancing DEI. She recently participated in the ANA-California Task Force on the Assessment to Eradicate Racism in Nursing Education and the Workforce.
Ms. Carrico is the 2024 AcademyHealth Diversity Scholars Program Policy and Politics in Nursing Scholar.
