Barry Blumenfeld M.D., M.S. is a senior physician informaticist in the Division of eHealth, Quality, and Analytics (eQUA), at RTI International and serves as the principal investigator for the AHRQ sponsored Patient-Centered Clinical Decision Support Learning Network. He is a formally trained Informaticist with a record of leadership in healthcare information systems design, development, implementation, and optimization and is adept at harmonizing the pressing needs of clinicians with the data and performance objectives of healthcare institutions. Dr. Blumenfeld has held multiple roles at the intersection of Healthcare and Informatics. From 2008 through 2013 Dr. Blumenfeld was Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for MaineHealth and Maine Medical Center, where he led the implementation of a common Electronic Health Record (EHR) for the eight-hospital integrated delivery system. Prior to that, Dr. Blumenfeld was General Manager, Solutions Architecture, for GE Healthcare Integrated IT Solutions. In this capacity, he led business-wide product integration initiatives for this operating unit within GE’s healthcare division. Prior to that role, Dr. Blumenfeld was Associate Director, Clinical Informatics R&D for Partners Healthcare System in Boston, where he led a team engaged in applied research and software development for this Harvard affiliated Integrated Delivery Network. Dr. Blumenfeld obtained his MD at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed a residency in Internal Medicine in Boston in 1985. He also completed a fellowship in Medical informatics at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989, as well as a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence in 1990.
A learning network aims to address barriers to implementing research findings in clinical care through patient-centered clinical decision support. Research in this emerging area will be featured in Better Decisions Together, a new special section in AcademyHealth’s journal eGEMs.
