Washington D.C. (6/19/2018)— Today, AcademyHealth announced the launch of a new a year-long fellowship program focused on the use of real world data and methods in private organizations to better prepare health services researchers to weave different sources of data together to better address individual patient needs and improve health outcomes.
Real world evidence (RWE), or information collected outside of a clinical trial, is playing an increasingly important role in health care decision-making. As interest in RWE utilization grows, there is an emerging need for RWE focused training for the health services research (HSR) workforce. The Real World Evidence Fellowship is AcademyHealth’s answer to the need for HSR workforce development in this field.

“The fellowship is an integral part of our mission to strengthen and develop the HSR workforce and builds on our 15-year track record in developing and managing fellowships that embed researchers in diverse settings,” said Margo Edmunds, vice president at AcademyHealth. “The program’s focus on RWE reflects changes in health care and research ecosystems and aims to prepare the next generation of the HSR workforce beyond the confines of academia.”

The Fellowship offers fellows the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of career options available to them beyond traditional academic paths and be better prepared to enter the private workforce.

In 2018, Sanofi, a leading global pharmaceutical company that transforms scientific innovation into health care solutions, will support the RWE Fellowship. “We’re excited to work with AcademyHealth to offer this fellowship in its inaugural year,” said Anne Beal, global head of patient solutions at Sanofi. “Fellows will have the chance to explore new methods, creative methodology, advanced analytics, and machine learning.” RWE fellows working with Sanofi will focus on the use of real world evidence across a variety of functions including biostatistics, epidemiology, HSR, artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, health policy, health administration, health behavior, and health education. “This program will be a win-win situation for both Sanofi and the fellows,” adds Juhaeri Juhaeri, head of epidemiology and benefit-risk evaluation at Sanofi. “The fellows will learn not only advanced methods in the RWE field but also the applications of these methods in the real-life biopharmaceutical setting. Sanofi will benefit from the fellows’ expertise to meet its business needs and will have the opportunity to participate in the development of the future RWE leaders.”

AcademyHealth will provide fellows with opportunities for abstract submissions, funding information, and presentations as well as a one-year AcademyHealth membership and registration for AcademyHealth’s 2019 Health Datapalooza. Other activities include additional in-person meetings and networking opportunities.  The 2018 Fellowship application cycle will launch in early August and close in late September. Fellows will begin their appointments at Sanofi in January 2019.
