Stephen D. Persell, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Primary Care Innovation at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He is a health services researcher and general internist. His research has involved multiple aspects of primary care delivery including the design, implementation and evaluation of EHR-based quality improvement tools, practice redesign and improvement techniques, and methods for clinician performance measurement.  His research and academic work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and industry. He has played an active part nationally in the development and assessment of quality measures used to judge clinical performance including serving as the co-chair for the Preventive Care and Screening Work Group of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement, the chair of the Cardiovascular Measurement Advisory Panel of the NCQA, a member for several other multi-organization performance measures work groups, and a member American College of Physicians’ Performance Measurement Committee.  Dr. Persell received his MD from Harvard Medical School and MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. He did internal medicine residency training in the primary care program at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in health services research at Harvard. He joined the Northwestern faculty in 2003 was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2014 and to Professor in 2020. He works actively with Northwestern Medicine's quality improvement team where he serves as the Medical Director of Quality for Northwestern Medical Group. Clinically he sees adult primary care patients and precepts residents in clinic and on the inpatient medical service at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
