This project is funded under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s research program, “Health Data for Action (HD4A),” which makes valuable data from unique data owners available to researchers to answer important research questions. The goal of the study is to examine and classify the payment and pricing bases for hospital-health plan contracts. Using Clarify Health data, the study seeks to look at 1) how do hospital price levels vary and what drives higher prices? 2) what is the payment basis for hospital care (for example, fee-for-service versus prospective payments)? and 3) what pricing bases are used (for example, are prices benchmarked to hospital list prices, Medicare’s fee schedule or some other basis)? Deliverables will include a project work plan and final narrative report. The applicants will use linear, logistic, or multinomial regression methods as appropriate to assess their aims. The researchers will also produce paper(s) suitable for publication and present findings at national research meetings and to other stakeholder audiences as appropriate, including policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels and other key stakeholders, as part of the deliverables for this grant.
