Dr. Weingart holds an M.D. degree from the University of Rochester and a doctorate in public policy from Harvard University. He completed an internal medicine residency and fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He served in leadership roles including VP for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and Director of the Center for Patient Safety at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Chief Medical Officer at Tufts Medical Center, and President of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. He is currently Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Tufts Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Weingart is active clinically as a general internist. His academic and administrative contributions have focused on the implementation of innovative safety practices in the hospital, in ambulatory care, and at home. His research addresses patient safety in primary and specialty care; opportunities and limitations of patient engagement in patient safety; strategies to understand and enhance error reporting; quality measurement; and diagnostic error. His current project focuses on disparities in timely breast cancer diagnosis by using mixed methods to understand how patients experience and navigate their diagnostic journey.
