This project is funded under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s research program, “Health Data for Action (HD4A),” which makes valuable data from unique data owners available to researchers to answer important research questions. The goal of the study is to examine the identification, precursors, and outcomes of firearm injuries using real world data (RWD). Using Truveta data, the study seeks to assess: 1) the health care utilization outcomes of nonfatal firearm injuries and how they differ from utilization patterns in non-injured peers; and 2) the precursors to firearm injuries, present in RWD, to identify future opportunities for prevention and intervention. The proposed project would use data from more than 160,000 individuals with a firearm injury initially treated in the inpatient or emergency department setting between 2018-2023 and examine disparities by social determinants of health variables such as social support and housing stability. Both research aims will compare patients with a firearm injury to controls with no firearm-related encounters during the study period and applicants will employ weighted logistic regression methods and odds ratio calculations in their analysis. Deliverables will include a project work plan and final narrative reports. The researchers will also produce paper(s) suitable for publication and present findings at national research meetings and to other stakeholder audiences as appropriate, including policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels and other key stakeholders, as part of the deliverables for this grant.
