Medicaid’s Unique Role in COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts

In a JAMA commentary published last week, three Medicaid Medical Directors from AcademyHealth’s Medicaid Medical Directors Network examine how Medicaid programs can ensure equitable administration of COVID-19 vaccines.

Medicaid Medical Directors in Washington, Massachusetts, and Virginia provide a rationale for Medicaid taking the lead to ensure the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations in a JAMA Viewpoint titled Medicaid and COVID-19 Vaccination—Translating Equitable Allocation Into Equitable Administration. The authors, all members of AcademyHealth’s Medicaid Medical Directors Network, offers strategies to expand vaccine services via the following ways: 

  1. Make it easy for Medicaid members to access COVID-19 vaccines;
  2. Build trust through clear, consistent, and inclusive messaging; and
  3. Partner widely to ensure successful implementation.
