This project is funded under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s research program, “Health Data for Action (HD4A),” which makes valuable data from unique data owners available to researchers to answer important research questions. The goal of the study is to provide actionable evidence to assist state officials and other stakeholders, such as insurers, clinicians, hospital administrators, and policymakers in crafting more impactful policy and programmatic interventions for postpartum health care among women with gestational diabetes. Nebraska has recently expanded Medicaid postpartum coverage from two months to twelve months, and the study’s results will serve as initial estimates of the potential impact of reducing barriers to postpartum care. Using Nebraska Health Collaborative data merged with Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) social determinants data, the study seeks to: 1) identify and describe predictors of transitioning from postpartum obstetric care to postpartum primary care among women with gestational diabetes mellitus in Nebraska and Iowa, and 2) define and measure the predictors of the completion of guideline-recommended diabetic testing in the postpartum period. Guided by the Andersen theoretical model, the applicants plan to consider a range of factors, including environmental, health behavior, personal, and population characteristics. Multivariable logistic regressions will be used to assess the study aims. Deliverables will include a project work plan and final narrative and financial reports. The researchers will also produce paper(s) suitable for publication and present findings at national research meetings and to other stakeholder audiences as appropriate, including policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels and other key stakeholders, as part of the deliverables for this grant.
