Compensation is an important part of the career decision-making process, however it is often cloaked in mystery. To bring transparency to pay in the field of health services and policy research (HSR), AcademyHealth conducted the 2023 Salary and Compensation Survey to examine how compensation varies across geographic regions, career levels, and gender. Additionally, because our recent member needs analyses indicate growing concern about burnout, the survey also considered other components of compensation as well as work culture, and satisfaction in the field.
The survey informed two valuable new AcademyHealth member benefits:
- Salary and Compensation Report, a detailed report, created in collaboration with the Department of Health Services Policy and Management at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health
- Salary Comparison Tool, an online interactive tool for researchers to search and compare their salary with their peers in the field
Recognizing that negotiating a higher salary is important for career advancement, AcademyHealth is offering these resources as benefits for its membership community. The data used in the tool is based on information from the 2023 AcademyHealth Salary and Compensation Survey in which a total of 7,115 researchers were surveyed and 564 responded, yielding a survey response rate of 7.9 percent.
