The COVID-19 pandemic magnified the role of the low-income, predominantly immigrant agricultural workforce. Farmworkers are the backbone of California’s $50 billion agricultural industry. Farmworkers are regarded as frontline workers who toiled in the fields through excessive heat, smoke, and contagion in one of the nation’s most dangerous occupations. Yet, California farmworkers are significantly less likely to have health insurance coverage than the general population. Farmworkers are also ineligible for most of the State’s safety-net services. Even with the upcoming Medi-Cal expansion to remove immigration restrictions in 2024, an estimated 44 percent of farmworkers will remain uninsured
