Each fellow will be paired with an implementation science (IS) mentor. Implementation scientists with an MD and/or advanced degree in a relevant health or HSR related field, or those who demonstrate comparable expertise, with more than 10 years of post-terminal degree experience are encouraged to apply.

Mentor Requirements

Each mentor will be required to:

  • Provide mentorship and support to one fellow over the course of the two-year fellowship
  • Hold biweekly Implementation Science Mentor Coaching Calls with their fellow (1:1)
  • Attend quarterly check-ins with program staff (AcademyHealth and Amgen)
  • Monitor and support fellow progress in building implementation science skills
  • Provide asynchronous feedback on fellow abstracts, manuscripts, research project, and dissemination of work
  • Attend monthly Learning Sessions
  • Attend AcademyHealth’s Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation and Annual Research Meeting (ARM) in both fellowship years

Mentors will receive a $25,000 stipend per year, as well as complimentary registration and travel support for AcademyHealth’s ARM and Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation. Successful applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria and submit a completed Mentor Application Form along with supporting documentation.

Applicant Eligibility Criteria

  • Must hold an advanced degree in a relevant health (e.g., M.D., D.O., PharmD, Nursing Ph.D.) or health services research (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D., DrPH) related field, or demonstrate comparable expertise through professional experience, with more than 10 years of post-terminal degree experience.
  • Must have implementation science expertise.
  • Demonstrated professional expertise in one of four main therapeutic areas is preferred, but not required:  
    • Bone health (i.e., osteoporosis)
    • Severe uncontrolled asthma with or without associated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
    • Thyroid eye disease
    • IgG4-related conditions
  • Current employment in a health care delivery setting (hospitals and clinics/practices), public health setting, or academic university is preferred, but not required.  
  • Mentors must have the ability to commit to fulfilling all mentor requirements specified above for the two-year fellowship period.
  • Mentors must be based in the United States and legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship program.
  • Prior experience serving as a professional mentor in a scientific setting is desirable.
    • For the purposes of this application, prior experience serving as a professional mentor includes formal or structured mentoring relationships in which the applicant has guided the scientific work or professional career development of less experienced researchers, scientists, or technical professionals.

    • A statement of interest (no longer than 1,000 words) detailing applicant’s prior experience as a mentor, interest in serving as a mentor for this fellowship program, and experience with capacity building
