Dr. Erwin is an applied medical anthropologist, with more than 35 years of experience developing and researching culturally-based interventions with African-American and Latinx community health workers, cancer survivors, lay health advisors and volunteers for improving community outreach and screening. She co-founded The National Witness Project, a breast and cervical cancer education and screening intervention for African American women in 1991. It has been replicated in over 30 sites, is currently active in about 12 sites, and the model has been trans-created for increasing screening for colorectal cancer and for Latinx. She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and her research has been funded by NIH/NCI, American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NYS and the John R. Oshei Foundation. Currently, Dr. Erwin continues to collaborate on research to investigate the use of the Witness Project model for lung cancer screening and the long-term sustainability of this community-based model. She is collaborating with her partner, Dee Johnson, to contract with WNY health plans to provide services through Witness CARES, LLC to optimize screening and access to health services for Medicaid members.
