The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health seeks a director for the Center for Public Health Practice (CPHP).  Set within one of the highest-ranking schools of public health in the nation, the Center for Public Health Practice’s mission is to develop innovative yet practical solutions for population health challenges at the local, state, and national levels, and to provide education and training for students, practitioners, and leaders in public health. The CPHP benefits from a strong relationship with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the country’s leading integrated finance and healthcare delivery system.

 

We seek candidates with experience in both public health practice and academic public health. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, innovative leader who will craft and realize a strategic vision for the Center.

The director’s position is a faculty appointment of open rank that may be in the practice track or in the standard academic track in any one of the school’s seven departments. Major responsibilities of the position are: 

Strategic visioning and leadership

  • Provide leadership in building regional collaborations to improve population health.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for public health practice within CPHP and the school

Practice-based scholarship and education

  • Promote public health practice in scholarly and educational activities throughout the school and the university.
  • Create opportunities, mentor, and reward participation by students and faculty members in practice-based research, teaching, and service
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed literature on practice-based scholarship
  • Engage public health practitioners in research and teaching

Resource development

  • Raise funds through grants and contracts for practice-based research and training
  • Participate in national initiatives to develop projects and funding sources for and recognition of practice-based scholarship
  • Communicate with private foundations, public policy makers, and legislators

Basic qualifications for the position include a terminal degree in a public health field (PhD, DrPH), or a doctoral degree in another health profession with a master's degree in a public health, and a minimum of five years of practice in public health, or equivalent experience directly related to public health practice.

A successful candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications: the ability to work with a diverse community, faculty, staff, and students; knowledge of the diverse fields of public health education and practice, and a vision for making practice an integral part of preparing tomorrow’s leaders; ability to translate academic discoveries and technological innovations into policy and practice; skills in collaborative work in communities; and proven success in academic and public health leadership.

Other desired qualifications include experience in teaching graduate-level courses, demonstrated excellence in developing and implementing collaborative public health programs, and experience developing and delivering workforce training programs, including demonstrated success in acquiring relevant training grants.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Center for Public Health Practice

The Center for Public Health Practice (CPHP) serves as a catalyst for engaged scholarship in public health through applied research, practice-based teaching, and professional service. Working in close collaboration with community, health systems, and government partners, the CPHP is a resource to strengthen population health.

The CPHP provides resources for: professionals to advance knowledge and skills for public health practice; students to experience professional practice in supervised settings; and organizations to benefit from customized solutions for workplace needs.

Key capabilities of the CPHP include: continuing education & training; leadership & organizational development; law & policy analysis; program planning & implementation, and implementation science.

The CPHP is a school-wide center located administratively within the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School of Public Health. Faculty members in the CPHP hold appointments in departments throughout the school. The CPHP is housed on the seventh floor of Crabtree Hall at the interface of the Pitt/UPMC Health Sciences and other schools of the University.
