What is the Health Equity Scholars Program?

The Health Equity Scholars Program is designed to provide AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting registration and attendance assistance to members of historically excluded, minoritized racial/ethnic groups. Mentoring is a core component of the program.

What is the Policy and Politics in Nursing Scholarship?

The Policy and Politics in Nursing Scholarship is a special slot within the larger AcademyHealth Health Equity Scholars Program. The scholarship aims to support the specific professional development of nurses from historically excluded, underrepresented groups in the field of health services research.

Can I apply to both the Health Equity Scholars Program and the Policy and Politics in Nursing Scholarship?

No, applications will be considered either for the Health Equity Scholars Program or the Policy and Politics in Nursing Scholarship.

Please note: Due to program requirements, applicants who are not U.S. citizens are not eligible to apply.

What do I need for the application?

To apply, applicants must upload and submit the following materials to the online application system: 

  • A completed online application form, including in the submission:
    • Current Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
    • Statement of Interest (500 words max). The essay should address your personal learning objectives, demonstrated interest in the field of HSR, health systems research,and/or disparities and equity research; and past or current research/work related to HSR. The essay should also show a clear connection between your stated learning objectives and professional goals and your interest in being a health equity scholar. We strongly suggest that you write the essay out in a Word document and then copy and paste it into the form.
  • Supporting documentation, including:
    • If applicable, documentation of student status (e.g. scanned copy of student ID, departmental letter)
    • Signed letter of recommendation from your faculty advisor or work supervisor on official letterhead

What are the review criteria?

The selection committee will review applications based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the field of HSR or disparities research through past or current research/work experience in either field
  • Clear connection between the stated learning objectives and the reason for attending the conference
  • Quality of the essay
  • Level of faculty advisor’s or work supervisor’s support for the applicant

The Policy and Politics in Nursing applications will also be reviewed based on the following additional criteria:

  • Evidence of interest in policy and/or health services research.
  • Professional objectives align with the program's opportunities.
  • Clear description of why the scholarship would benefit the applicant.
  • CV shows evidence of engagement of research- and policy-related work.

How is the award provided?

Health Equity Scholars Program awardees will be reimbursed to a specific limit, provided upon selection, for conference registration, travel, and a per diem for the Annual Research Meeting.

Policy and Politics in Nursing Scholarship awardees will be reimbursed to a specific limit, provided upon selection, for conference registration for the Annual Research Meeting and one other AcademyHealth conference, travel for both meetings, meals, and childcare (as needed.)

When does the application cycle open?

The application cycle opens in January.

When does the application cycle close?

When are the awardees notified?

Awardees are notified in mid-to-late April.
