This February 2017 special issue of HSR investigates the ways health care workers can be trained to deliver high-quality care, deployed to help improve health care, and studied to find ways to increase both effectiveness and efficiency. The issue's opening article outlines four themes on the evolution of the health care workforce including the changing roles of health care providers, the changing combinations of different providers who work together to deliver care, the impact of these workforce changes on quality of care and access to care, and advances in methodological challenges inherent in the study of evolving health workforce changes. The concepts and findings presented here can assist researchers and policy makers alike as they continue their work to inform the field and engage in decision making.
