Ayorkor Gaba, PsyD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Addiction Psychiatry, at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Gaba is a faculty member of the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center of Excellence in Addictions and the Research Core of the Massachusetts Center of Excellence for Specialty Courts (CoE). Dr. Gaba's work has focused on the study and treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, which has included special populations such as those whom are homeless, veterans, women, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Dr. Gaba’s work has been funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, Bureau of Justice Assistance, and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. This work includes implementation and testing of evidence-based treatment models including Maintaining Independence and Sobriety through Systems Integration, Outreach, and Networking (MISSION) (MISSIONModel.org) to address co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder; Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT) to address alcohol use disorder via a couples intervention and female-specific cognitive behavioral therapy (FS-CBT) to address alcohol use disorder via a gender-informed CBT intervention designed for alcohol-dependent women. Dr. Gaba has worked closely with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, Massachusetts Executive Office of the Trial Court, City of Worcester Department of Health and Human Services, and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Last, Dr. Gaba serves as an appointed American Psychological Association NGO representative to the United Nations. Dr. Gaba’s work and interests are informed by cross-cultural, systems, social justice and human rights perspectives.
