Dr. Ciaran Phibbs is an Associate Director of Geriatrics and Extended Care Data and Analysis Center, and a research health economist whose primary research interests include the interaction of hospital competition with costs, demand and outcomes; and perinatal and neonatal care. Dr. Phibbs is Associate Professor of Neonatology at Stanford University. Dr. Phibb’s interests have led him to study how hospitals and patient characteristics affect the demand for hospital services, and define hospital markets, hospital scale economies and capacity utilization; how Neonatal Intensive Care Units care effects neonatal mortality, the effects of nurse staffing on patient outcomes; the effectiveness of clinical interventions; and the demand for VA services and Veterans’ choice between VA and non-VA services. Dr. Phibbs is also a professor in the Department of Pediatrics – Neonatal and Developmental Medicine at Stanford University.
