Thomas Rice holds the position of Distinguished in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. A health economist, his areas of interest include international health care systems, competition and regulation, behavioral economics, physicians’ economic behavior, and health insurance. His upcoming book, Health Insurance Systems in High-Income Countries, will be published in 2021. The second edition of a book he and his colleagues are writing about the U.S. health care system, for the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, will be published in 2020. The fourth edition of his book, The Economics of Health Reconsidered, was published in 2016. Dr. Rice is also co-editor of a 2017 book on how behavioral economics can be used to improve healthy behaviors. He was editor of the journal, Medical Care Research and Review, from 1994 to 2000, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Rice has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of AcademyHealth, chaired its Annual Research Meeting, and has received its Young Investigator Award and Article-of-the-Year Award.
