Dr. Catherine L. Chen is a board-certified anesthesiologist and health services researcher with a primary research interest in optimizing the quality and value of care patients receive during the perioperative period. Of particular interest is the study of resource utilization and low-value care among Medicare cataract surgery patients. Dr. Chen also studies perioperative opioid prescribing patterns to better understand how surgeons and anesthesiologists can help mitigate the opioid crisis. After a brief stint in investment banking, Dr. Chen obtained her MD and MPH from Johns Hopkins followed by an anesthesia residency and research fellowship at UCSF. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the UCSF Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care and Core Faculty in the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF.
