Webinar: Mobilizing Computable Biomedical Knowledge for Learning Health Systems

We know the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic has understandably shifted the focus of our members and our broader community, but we remain committed to sharing perspectives from health services researchers working on more general issues to expand access to care, reduce costs and improve quality. This webinar is an example of the ongoing important work happening across the field of health services research. 

Overview

For Learning Health Systems (LHSs) to transform the future of health, simply harnessing the power of data and analytics (and even artificial intelligence and machine learning) to glean new knowledge from health experiences is insufficient. It is equally important to put that knowledge to use. In order to reshape health outcomes, timely, relevant, up to date, and actionable knowledge must be mobilized to empower clinicians, patients, and all other stakeholders making decisions affecting health.

Unfortunately, this translation of knowledge into practice is not happening routinely. Although biomedical knowledge now doubles in volume every 73 days, it can take 17 years or more for such knowledge to improve individual and population health. The current reliance on disseminating knowledge in human readable forms—via books and journals—is a major cause of this latency. Reducing it requires an entirely new kind of infrastructure—technology, policy, and people—to support the creation, curation, management, dissemination, and activation of biomedical knowledge in computer-readable forms. This infrastructure will enable LHSs to generate and deliver relevant, personalized, and timely advice to care providers, patients, and organizations with unprecedented flexibility and rapidity. 

For this reason, the Learning Health Community sponsored a webinar in collaboration with AcademyHealth to introduce participants to a burgeoning movement to Mobilize Computable Biomedical Knowledge (MCBK).

Learning Objectives

• Illuminate why Mobilizing Computable Biomedical Knowledge (MCBK) is foundational to reducing the latency between discovery and application of biomedical knowledge.
• Describe the purposes of the MCBK movement and share work underway to advance it.
• Provide perspectives on the roles multi-stakeholder trust and policy play in mobilizing computable knowledge.
• Share information on upcoming collaborative events and opportunities for diverse stakeholders to participate in the movement.
