Maddie Lepore was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she continues to reside today. After starting her nursing career in hematology-oncology, she transitioned into psychiatry. Maddie Lepore started off at Western Psychiatric Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania as a staff nurse on the Dual Diagnosis Unit, and now works as a nurse clinician on the Dual Diagnosis Unit in Western Psychiatric Hospital.
Maddie Lepore is finishing up her doctoral degree at the University of Pittsburgh to become a psychiatric mental-health nurse practitioner. Her research is focused on a policy analysis of syringe decriminalization, highlighting the dire need of access to syringe service programs in rural areas. Maddie Lepore has been a volunteer for the syringe service program in western Pennsylvania, Prevention Point Pittsburgh, for four years now providing wound care to people who use drugs. Upon graduating, she will continue to teach undergraduate nursing students in Western Psychiatric Hospital, while starting to conduct initial psychiatric evaluations in the Psychiatric Emergency Services department at Western Psychiatric Hospital. Her current research efforts are on medical emergencies occurring within 24 hours of admission to a psychiatric unit. Additionally, she will be providing psychiatric care in a rural clinic serving Washington County, Pennsylvania after receiving her psychiatric nurse practitioner degree. Her interests continue to focus on the intersection of harm reduction for substance use disorders with policy and legislation affecting marginalized populations in Pennsylvania.
