As the Surgeon General so clearly stated, you can’t be healthy without good oral health. More and more evidence is emerging linking oral health to chronic conditions like diabetes and to overall health care costs. At the same time, dental care consistently ranks at the top in terms of health care services people avoid due to cost. As health care reform reshapes health care delivery and financing, there is a unique opportunity to re-examine how oral health issues are addressed in federal and state policy. The AcademyHealth Oral Health Interest Group invites researchers, practitioners, policymakers and advocates interested in evidence-based policy dialogue around oral health. The interest group will provide a forum to share knowledge, challenges, research methods and best practices in improving access to oral health care, oral health-related quality of care, and oral health outcomes.

The mission of the Oral Health Interest Group is to improve the oral health of diverse communities, particularly vulnerable populations by generating, synthesizing, and disseminating policy research focusing on oral health.

  • To support and foster the expansion of health services research focusing on critical policy issues in oral health.
  • To build research and practice coalitions to generate new data and spearhead new research on effective policy approaches to oral health challenges.
  • To bring together multiple disciplines to foster awareness of oral health issues and integrate oral health into broader health services research initiatives.
