As a nurse and health scientist, Dr. Denise Hynes develops and evaluates health system interventions in relation  to patients’ health care access, use, and patient centered outcomes.  Veterans are a special focus of her research.  Her current research program focuses on implementing and evaluating health system interventions and incentives on patient outcomes in VA healthcare and private health care.

Dr. Hynes is a Research Scientist in the US Department of Veterans Affairs since 1991, currently appointed at the Portland VA Health Care System as a part of the Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC). She also holds a tenured Professor position at Oregon State University in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences and as the Program Director of the Health Data & Informatics (HDI) Program in the Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing. She also holds a courtesy faculty appointment at the Oregon Health and Science University, School of Nursing.
