Andrea Downing is a security researcher, and a patient safety advocate work at the intersection of health data privacy, digital rights, and trustworthy AI in healthcare. She is co-founder of The Light Collective, a nonprofit with mission to advance the rights, interests, and voices of patient communities in health technology. She is working to develop rights-based frameworks and plain-language tools that strengthen patient rights and representation in AI standards, policy, and health system decision-making. She has helped convene and shape cross-sector dialogue on AI safety, privacy, and patient voice in healthcare with the FDA, the National Academy of Medicine, Health AI Partnership, CancerX, and other forums influencing the future of health AI.  Earlier, Andrea’s disclosure of a major Facebook closed-group privacy vulnerability prompted a congressional inquiry and helped elevate national debate to advance consumer health privacy protections with the FTC.
