Access to quality health care systems is essential to good health, and it is not possible without affordable, quality health insurance coverage. While there is consensus that more reform is needed to improve the value we receive from our investment in health care in the U.S., questions remain around the optimal mechanisms to achieve this goal. In 2017, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded seven grants, managed by AcademyHealth, to support policy-relevant analyses that can inform strategies to ensure access to high-quality, affordable health care and insurance coverage, including issues related to the affordability and stability of the individual insurance market, the experiences of patients and providers in Medicaid and the safety net, and strategies regarding benefit design and consumer engagement, among other important topics. In 2022, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded five grants, managed by AcademyHealth, to support analyses that investigate the effects of recent Medicaid policy changes and those enacted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic on people of color, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ community, and other historically marginalized communities. In 2023, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded four community-engaged research grants, managed by AcademyHealth, that examine the design, implementation, and impact of local, state, or national policies on the affordability of high-quality, equitable care.
