Using Health Data

Hosted by AcademyHealth, the 2023 Health Equity DataJam invites participants to transform raw data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services into actionable insights and digital tools to bridge disparities of health, including those exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Long COVID, and infection-associated chronic illnesses to ensure equitable access and wellness for all. AcademyHealth's Evidence-Informed State Health Policy Institute supports this research network that enables participating states to harness multi-state Medicaid data to address issues of national public health importance and measure the impact of innovative policies and interventions.

AcademyHealth’s Evidence-Informed State Health Policy Institute (ESHPI) aims to increase the use of relevant, timely and translatable evidence in state policymaking to improve health and health care quality, outcomes, equity, accessibility and affordability.

Since 2016, AcademyHealth has worked with the California Health Care Foundation to assist digital health market entrants understand their responsibilities under and effectively navigate the Privacy and Security Rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well as other federal and California privacy and security laws.

With support from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Foundation, AcademyHealth’s Evidence-Informed State Health Policy Institute in collaboration with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill is assessing syphilis testing among pregnant Medicaid beneficiaries as well as rates of STI testing of state Medicaid beneficiaries on PrEP.

AcademyHealth manages the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Data for Action (HD4A) program. HD4A equips researchers with valuable data —information that can help them better answer important research questions.

With funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, AcademyHealth, in collaboration with Innovations Horizons, is supporting pilot projects and work groups to help understand the potential of and challenges to using internet data to facilitate timely, accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Managed by AcademyHealth, this learning network facilitates peer-to-peer learning and dialogue among researchers working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s T-MSIS Analytic Files.

With funding from a Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award, AcademyHealth and a group of diverse stakeholders are identifying evidence gaps related to person-generated data; setting priorities for future studies; and providing insights into personal technology preferences that can inform the development of future consumer-facing tools.

With support from the HHS’ Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, AcademyHealth’s Evidence-Informed State Health Policy Institute and NORC are exploring state-level data approaches to improve patient-centered maternal health outcomes.
